Chaoyang Museum

Established in 1973, Chaoyang Museum is a history-themed museum and the largest institution in Chaoyang City for the collection, exhibition, and research of cultural relics. Its current location is at Nanta Square. The museum was completed and opened to the public free of charge on September 30, 2011. The building covers a total land area of 3,600 square meters, with a floor area of 9,618 square meters.

Chaoyang Museum houses a vast and diverse collection of cultural relics, primarily including Shang and Zhou dynasty bronze ritual vessels, horse tack and gold-copper ornaments from the Former Yan, Later Yan, and Northern Yan periods of the Sixteen Kingdoms, Tang dynasty tri-colored glazed pottery (Tang San Cai), glazed pottery figurines and painted pottery figures from the Tang dynasty, artifacts from the Khitan people of the Liao dynasty, as well as ceramics and precious calligraphy and paintings from the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. These relics all come from the culturally rich soil of Chaoyang and represent invaluable cultural artifacts that embody the region’s historical legacy. They also reflect the distinctive characteristics of the ancient cultural heritage of western Liaoning, making them of great value for the study of the origins of Chinese civilization and the cultural history of northern ancient ethnic groups.

Chaoyang Museum serves as an educational base for ancient culture studies at Chaoyang Health School, a patriotic education demonstration base for Chaoyang City, a vocational ethics practice base for civil servants in Chaoyang City, and a warning education base for combating cultural relic crimes. It has been honored with the title of “Advanced Collective in the First National Survey of Movable Cultural Relics.” In recent years, numerous scholars from China and abroad in the fields of history and archaeology have visited for academic research and investigation. The museum has become an important academic research hub in Liaoning Province for the study of northern Chinese history, the history of northern ethnic groups, and archaeological culture.
