Taller than the Burj Khalifa — Wuhan to Build World’s Tallest Phoenix Towers

No one can limit China’s reach for the sky. Less than a year after the cancellation of an 838-meter tower project in Changsha, China, architects are already planning an even taller structure. China is set to build two Phoenix Towers in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, standing approximately 1 kilometer high. These will become the tallest towers in the world, with completion expected in 2017/2018.

The twin towers will feature the most futuristic design and eco-consciousness, and they’ll even be pink. According to the design team, the pink color is chosen to complement the area’s stunning sunsets.

Situated on an island in a lake, these massive twin towers will stand 172 meters taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. However, the project is still awaiting final government approval. But if all goes through, it will rival Saudi Arabia’s planned “Kingdom Tower” in Jeddah, which is also aiming for a height of around 1 kilometer — though the Kingdom Tower is not expected to be completed until 2019.

With a population of 9.7 million in 2012, Wuhan is located along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and serves as a major transportation hub, earning it the nickname “the Chicago of China.”
