Former Residence of Martyr Zhang Shicong

It is situated in Goudaoshui Village, Dacheng Township. In 1985, to honor the memory of revolutionary martyr Zhang Shicong, the county government installed a plaque at his former residence, designating the area as a revolutionary site for commemoration and protection.

Zhang Shicong (1909–1945), childhood name Yunsheng, courtesy name Xueming, was born on the eleventh day of the seventh lunar month in 1909, into a moderately well-off farming family in Goudaoshui Village, Baishishui (now Dacheng, Pubei, Guangxi), Hepu County, Guangdong Province. His family had been farmers for generations, though his father also engaged in business, which slightly improved their living conditions. However, due to bandit attacks, his father was abducted and, unable to pay the ransom, was tragically killed. Orphaned at a young age, Zhang Shicong was the second of three brothers, and the family relied on his mother’s efforts, gradually falling into hardship. He began studying at a private school at the age of 8, where he was diligent and excelled academically. In July 1928, he was admitted to a provincial middle school in Guangdong.

Originally a talented scholar from Pubei who "burned incense and washed his hands before studying at night," Zhang Shicong came from a family of farmers. By his father’s generation, the family had saved some money and lived a relatively comfortable life. His father died early, and he was raised by his mother. In the autumn of 1935, he was admitted to the National Sun Yat-sen University, where he actively participated in the December 9th Student Movement. In the autumn of 1937, he left his studies to join the military and head to the front lines of the Anti-Japanese War. In February 1938, he joined the Communist Party of China. In the summer of 1940, he led and organized an armed uprising of over 2,000 people, serving as the commander of the Baishishui Armed Brigade. On the morning of May 6, 1945, he died heroically in battle against the enemy at Dawo Mountain in Dacheng Town, present-day Pubei County.
