Get to Know the Hakka, 2010 Taipei County Hakka Family Expo
Taipei County is about to enter the New Taipei era, but did you know there are also many Hakka people in Taipei County? The Hakka Affairs Bureau of the Taipei County Government held the 2010 Taipei County Hakka Family Expo, providing a platform and space for learning the Hakka language, allowing children to easily engage with Hakka culture, and helping families learn about Taiwan’s various ethnic groups and develop an appreciation for different cultures.

The family expo ran from October 28 to November 14, 2010 (Year 99 in the Republic of China calendar), for a total of 18 days, at the Taipei County Hakka Cultural Park. The activities were divided into four main categories: The first was the Show theme exhibition, featuring Hakka customs, faith and festivals, music and art, memorable images, and heartwarming animated content such as “Auntie Po and Little Smart” and “Gang-Gang~Coo-Coo.” The second category was Go parent-child experience games, including handmade toy making, Hakka culture exploration, hosting like a pro, painting little pigs, and eye-enlarging computer games. The third was Play Hakka Nostalgia Museum, which recreated the ambiance of old Hakka family homes, allowing children to experience early Hakka architecture, grain drying, and some of the farming tools and facilities used in the past, reliving the joy of 1940s Hakka rural life. The fourth category was cultural and artistic performances, with over 30 Hakka performances scheduled.
Parents and kids can join the “great to see, great to hear, great to play, great time” Hakka Expo, and a one-day tour of the San-Ying area (Yingge Ceramics Museum, Yingge Old Street, and Sanxia Old Street) is also planned. While enjoying the Hakka cultural feast, visitors can also explore the beautiful sights of New Taipei City.
