Nanchang Folk Museum

The Nanchang Folk Museum was established in 1988 and is the only professional folk museum in Jiangxi Province. Based in Nanchang and serving the entire province, the museum strives to explore regional cultural resources and is dedicated to collecting folk cultural relics with Gan culture characteristics to study the emergence, development, and evolution of local folk phenomena.

The Nanchang Folk Museum adheres to the purpose of promoting national culture and providing local education. Its collections and exhibitions are most notable for Jiangxi paper-cutting, folk embroidery, and local customs of the Nanchang area. It has successively held a series of popular thematic exhibitions such as the Jiangxi Children’s Embroidery Exhibition, Jiangxi Nuo Culture Exhibition, and Nanchang Wedding Customs Exhibition. It also features exhibitions on Nanchang Folk Customs, Jiangxi Embroidery Craft, and Jiangxi Folk Paper-cutting, which use rich illustrations and physical artifacts to provide a detailed introduction to Nanchang’s folk customs and old cityscapes. These allow visitors to experience the deep-rooted local flavor and authentic Gan culture within a limited time and space.

Permanent Exhibits

"Exhibition of Nanchang Folk Customs" – Nanchang’s folk culture belongs to the Yangtze River Basin folk culture circle. This exhibition showcases eight major themes including "Nanchang Ancient City Scenery," "Nanchang Customs," "Nanchang Wedding Customs," and "Nanchang Life Rituals," distinctly reflecting the characteristics of the region’s fishing-farming culture centered around rice and fish.

"Exhibition of Nanchang Childbirth Culture Customs" – Childbirth culture refers to the ideologies and corresponding norms and systems formed by people in relation to childbirth and associated activities. This exhibition is divided into four sections: "Reproductive Worship," "Traditional Marriage," "Child-Bearing Customs," and "New Trends in Childbirth." Through the visit, audiences can learn about the importance of population and family planning work in the new era.

Embroidered clothing – Men’s attire includes long robes, mandarin jackets, front-buttoned vests, wide-leg trousers, various hats, shoes, and accessories; women’s attire includes embroidered dresses, front-opening tops, trousers, cheongsams, various hats, shoes, headpieces, and ornaments; children’s items include various clothes, accessories, shoes, and hats; also includes aprons, purses, and sachets.

Agricultural tools – Water wheels, wheelbarrows, measuring buckets, blowers, etc.

Special Activities

Dynamic demonstrations of folk rituals, regular performances of folk art, and services such as folk storytelling allow visitors to enjoy moments of reflection and relaxation during their visit, providing beneficial stimulation for both sight and sound.
