The former site of the 20th Army Headquarters is a classic destination on China’s red tourism route.

The former site of the 20th Army Headquarters led by He Long is located at No. 85 Zugulu.

During the August 1 Nanchang Uprising, He Long and others directed the battle under heavy gunfire on the steps of this small building. The compound has two buildings—one was the office of the 20th Army headquarters, and the other was He Long’s office and bedroom, as well as the residences of Liu Bocheng, Yun Daiying, and others. Bullet marks can still be seen on the street-facing gate tower.

The former site of He Long’s Headquarters is one of the historic locations of the “Nanchang August 1 Uprising.” It is situated at No. 85 Zugulu in Nanchang City and includes two buildings—one was the office of the 20th Army headquarters, and the other was He Long’s office and bedroom, as well as the living quarters of Liu Bocheng, Yun Daiying, and others. Originally built as the Hongdao Hall of the Church of England in China, this site is a historic building that blends Chinese and Western architectural styles. In late July 1927, He Long led the 20th Army of the National Revolutionary Army to Nanchang to participate in the Nanchang Uprising, setting up the army headquarters at Hongdao Hall. Some uprising leaders stayed in the small building behind Hongdao Hall and held several important meetings there to plan the uprising. In the early hours of August 1, 1927, He Long, Liu Bocheng, and Zhou Yiqun directed the armed uprising from this location. Bullet marks from enemy artillery can still be seen on the windows of the third floor of the main building, serving as a vivid record of the intense fighting during the uprising. The small building at the site features a restored layout of the officers’ meeting room, and the main hall of the building also hosts an exhibition titled “The Life of Marshal He Long.”
