Former site of Zhenzhen Photography Studio

The former site of Zhenzhen Photography Studio is located at No. 40 Shengli Road, Tiejie Community, Tengwangge Subdistrict, Donghu District. It was rebuilt in the 1950s, faces northeast, has a width of 19 meters, a depth of 32 meters, and covers an area of approximately 400 square meters. The three-story building has a reinforced concrete structure. Zhenzhen Photography Studio was established in 1920, and its initial location was on the western section of Minde Road (now to the right of Children's Park). Later, the studio’s founder, Manager Wan Qizhen, received funding from Mr. Chen Hanzhou (a military and political figure, a graduate of the second class of Baoding Military Academy, and awarded the rank of Major General), and relocated to its current busy location on Shengli Road in 1930. At that time, the business occupied about 300 square meters, had two photography studios, and employed over 20 staff members. Thanks to sound management and ample financial backing, it monopolized all photography services for the military and government sectors, achieving considerable business volume. Notably, the group photos of Chiang Kai-shek meeting military and government officials during his visit to Nanchang, as well as portraits of him with his wife Soong Mei-ling, were also taken at this studio. In 1940, the studio was the first to purchase a generator, launching indoor lighting photography and marking the beginning of electric light photography in Jiangxi Province. This not only allowed business hours to be extended at will but also met the needs of lighting setups, significantly improving photo quality. The studio continuously introduced new services and styles, earning a high reputation among local residents.
