Stone Carving of the Bixi

The stone carving of the Bixi is located in Bayi Park, Liujiangjunmiao Community, Baihuazhou Subdistrict, Donghu District, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. Carved during the Qing Dynasty, it was originally the divine beast that carried a stele at Youmin Temple. After the stele was destroyed, it was moved to Bayi Park. To the west is Xiangshan North Road, to the east is Baihuazhou Road, to the south is Zhongshan Road, and to the north is Mindu Road. It neighbors the Bell and Drum Tower to the west, Bayi Park to the east, Zhuangyuan Bridge to the north, and the Nanchang Children’s Palace to the south. Its geographical coordinates are 28°40'55.9"N, 115°53'31.9"E, with an elevation of approximately 40 meters.

The stone carving measures 1.5 meters in length, 1 meter in width, and 0.5 meters in height, facing southwest. The Bixi is one of the nine sons of the dragon in legend, resembling a turtle and known for its ability to carry heavy loads. Throughout China, it can be seen in palaces, temples, and tombs, often depicted carrying stone stelae. It holds certain significance for the study and understanding of Nanchang’s history and culture. The Bixi carries the stele inscribed with “Moonlit Night over East Lake,” and there are two large relief carvings nearby.
