Tainan Canal

The Tainan Canal is a waterway encircling the Fifth Redevelopment Zone of Tainan City, connecting the urban area of Tainan with Anping Port. The ancient canal originally dug in the early 19th century silted up during the Japanese colonial period. In 1999, Tainan City carried out a major renovation of the canal, which resulted in significantly clearer water quality after completion.

The Tainan Canal is 3.782 kilometers long, with a surface width of 37 meters and a bottom width of 27.3 meters, and a water depth of 1.8 meters at low tide. Designed in 1922 by the Japanese engineer Matsumoto Kotaro, it is the longest man-made canal in Taiwan. The canal features boat docks in both Anping and the urban area of Tainan to accommodate vessels. The one in the urban area is commonly referred to as the "Canal Blind Section," which has since been filled in for commercial development as China Town. However, as Anping Port gradually silted up and its port functions were overtaken by Kaohsiung Port, the canal was repurposed for tourism. Dragon boat races are also held here during the Dragon Boat Festival. The Tainan City Government has planned to construct an underwater walkway that will eventually connect to the opposite side of the Canal Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy the aquatic ecosystem.

Many visitors come to fish along the banks of the Tainan Canal. Its beautiful waters make it a popular spot for wedding photos. In the evening, tourists often stroll along the canal pathways or visit the scenic viewpoints to take in the charming views. During holidays, performances are frequently held by the canal, and open-air cafés fill the air with the rich aroma of coffee, offering visitors a romantic atmosphere to enjoy.
