When it comes to Tainan, its rich and diverse local cuisine is deeply loved by netizens. Before the 2013 Tainan Food Festival kicked off, Yahoo! Taiwan Search revealed the top 10 most-searched foods that visitors must try in Tainan in 2013, with oyster omelet retaining the championship, while the highly recommended and popular traditional Tainan breakfast dish, savory congee, quickly rose in popularity, pushing aside Anping tofu pudding to take second place. Danzai noodles and shrimp rolls also made huge leaps, entering the top 10 for the first time.

Tainan is the origin of Taiwanese history, preserving nearly 400 years of local and foreign cultural culinary characteristics, which have contributed to the uniqueness of Tainan’s street food. According to Yahoo Taiwan Search, the top 10 most-searched foods that visitors must try in Tainan in the first three quarters of this year saw oyster omelet reclaim the top spot. Tainan’s traditional breakfast dish “savory congee” jumped from eighth place last year to second, while Anping tofu pudding ranked third. Danzai noodles and shrimp rolls also made significant progress, moving from outside the top 10 last year to fourth and fifth place this year. To promote Tainan’s street food, the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau will launch the “2013 Tainan Food Festival” series of events from November 16 to December 15, a one-month event divided into eight major food zones by region. A total of 319 food vendors across Greater Tainan have been invited to participate. This year, 28 items across three categories of traditional Tainan delicacies and local snacks have been selected as 2013 Tainan City traditional food and souvenir products. These are categorized by food vendors into food, beverages & ice cream, and souvenirs, compiled into the “My Food Passport,” also known as the “i” passport, making it easy for the public to locate and enjoy various delicacies. One of the event activities, the Happy Food “Red” and “Green” Stamp Lottery, divides the eight food zones into “Red Zones” and “Green Zones.” Visitors who spend NT$100 or more at participating stores can get one stamp by presenting the “i” passport or the fold-out stamp card. Collecting two stamps in the Red Zone and four stamps in the Green Zone gives participants a chance to win prizes including a carbon fiber bicycle worth about NT$80,000 and many other attractive rewards. To make it convenient for the public to submit their stamp cards this year, lottery boxes are set up in 170 FamilyMart convenience stores across Tainan City, where visitors can also get free scratch cards from store staff—20,000 in total. Scratch card winners receive a cup of FamilyMart coffee, with 1,000 cups available.

The series of events includes the “Food Stamp Marathon Challenge,” where participants use a marathon fold-out map to collect stamps by visiting food vendors in numerical order. The first to complete all stamps wins NT$10,000, and the top 10 winners will also receive a special gift of “Come Try a Bowl of Fucheng Cuisine” from the Tourism Bureau. The “Happy Food Moment – Tainan Food Lecture” invites Tainan’s food ambassador, teacher Huang Wanling, to discuss “Traditional Tainan Flavors,” along with local Tainan culinary master teacher Liang Youxiang, who will recount “Happy Tainan – Great Cooking Ideas,” offering insights into unique food culture. The “Taste of Tainan – Tainan Food Essay Competition” asks: Where are Tainan’s food lovers? We’re looking for those who love savoring Tainan’s cuisine and embracing slow travel to share their experiences through writing. The first prize is NT$8,000, and the top 10 winners will also receive a special gift of “Come Try a Bowl of Fucheng Cuisine” from the Tourism Bureau.
