Many people ask, “What is there to do in Tainan at night?” In fact, Tainan, rich in cultural history and scenic landscapes, is a place that’s fun both day and night. The Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau says that when you visit Tainan, you should stay an extra night to experience the city’s nightlife culture. You can sip a rich cup of night coffee in the city, cool off under the banyan trees in small towns, seek out nighttime-only specialty snacks, or even take a candlelit stroll to the suburbs to stargaze and enjoy the night view. Among them, Tainan’s nightlife is best represented by its night markets, which gather a variety of famous snacks and can be said to be a culmination of Tainan’s culinary delights. Streets like Haian Road, Shennong Street, and Zhengxing Street, resembling urban light corridors, transform into unique artistic landscapes through the projection of dazzling lights on their weathered old houses, making them popular spots for photography enthusiasts. The shops along these streets—ranging from pubs and tea houses to flavored kebabs and beer bars—are also great places for office workers to unwind and spend their evenings. In addition, various districts in Tainan offer a selection of nighttime-only delicacies, all worth trying even if it means sacrificing some sleep.

The Tourism Bureau said that this December, it launched the “Tainan Nightlife Bat” brochure, specially inviting freelance illustrator Beat to pour his creativity into depicting Tainan’s nightlife. Born in Taipei and now based in Tainan, Beat calls himself a creature of both comics and documentaries. Having shot countless images, he regards documentaries as a form of travel, deeply exploring the landscapes of other people’s lives. As the creator of the “Zhengxing Cat” in Tainan’s Zhengxing Street, Beat didn’t start out as a professional cartoonist. Through a process of self-exploration, he gradually built up his confidence and developed his own style, embarking on a life of communicating with the world through imagery. The “Tainan Bat Nightlife” map features Beat’s personal favorite spots and eateries accumulated over the years of living in Tainan. It includes “Urban Nightlife” with a variety of late-night delicacies, “Township Nightlife” featuring special late-night snacks, and “Outdoor Nightlife” for stargazing and watching sunrises. The illustrator’s hand-drawn map brochure, “Tainan Bat Nightlife,” has been available for free at public locations since Friday, December 2nd. The public is welcome to pick up a copy at any Tainan City tourist service center, as well as the Yonghua and Minzhi Municipal Joint Service Centers. Limited quantities are available, and the map can also be downloaded from the “Tainan Tourism Network” (http://www.twtainan.net/).
