Tainan Furniture Industry Museum

From manufacturing to creation, from factory to marketplace, Yongxing Furniture, which has a history of over fifty years since its establishment in Tainan, was the first to set up Taiwan’s first furniture industry museum in order to let more people understand the Taiwanese furniture industry, leaving behind a witness to the evolution of Taiwan’s furniture.

Located in Rende, Tainan, the Tainan Furniture Industry Museum is a furniture factory covering an area of over three thousand square meters. Originally established in 1958 as Yongxing Furniture, the factory was later left idle due to industrial relocation. In 2005, Mr. Yeh Tai-chin, one of the founders, initiated the establishment of the Tainan Furniture Industry Museum. In 2008, it was recognized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs as a “Tourism Factory,” preserving a valuable cultural asset of Taiwan’s furniture history.

The Tainan Furniture Industry Museum is currently divided into several zones, including the Collection Exhibition Hall, Planting Ecology Area, Yongxing Story Hall, Education Hall, Taiwan Furniture Hall, Story House, Driftwood Creation Area, Craft Plaza, and Woodworking Experience Area. Visitors can explore the distinctive features of Taiwanese furniture from various periods, learn about the materials and techniques used in furniture-making, and even try their hand at woodworking to experience the essence of mortise-and-tenon craftsmanship. In addition, the entire manufacturing process—from cutting, drying, lumber preparation, material staging, carpentry, carving, painting, to finished products—can be observed in full detail.

Based on the original old factory building and hardware facilities of Yongxing Furniture, the Tainan Furniture Industry Museum successfully transformed a traditional industry into an experiential tourism-based cultural and creative industry. It allows visitors to understand, through an educational and entertaining guided tour, that furniture is no longer just a simple commodity but rather an artwork imbued with cultural meaning.
