Wushan Water Curtain Cave Scenic Area

Wushan Water Curtain Cave is located in the Zhonglou Mountain Gorge, about 25 kilometers northeast of Wushan County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. The Water Curtain Cave itself is a natural rock cave approximately 50 meters high and over 20 meters deep. A small stream flows inside year-round, and during rainy days, water cascades down the cave’s eaves like a curtain—hence the name.

It now includes the Laxiao Temple, Thousand Buddha Cave, Xiansheng Pool, and Water Curtain Cave, forming a cave temple complex that is second only to the Maiji Mountain Grottoes in Tianshui. Together, they represent a significant Buddhist art site along the ancient southern route of the Silk Road in the upper reaches of the Wei River. The scenic area features the Laxiao Temple Giant Buddha, which boasts the largest open-air cliff relief Buddha in Asia. In total, the site preserves over a hundred statues from various dynasties, more than 2,000 square meters of murals, over ten buildings, eight stupas, ten inscribed stelae, and one headless mummy.

Transportation

1. Take a bus from Nanhu Bus Station in Qinzhou District to Wushan. Buses run every half hour. Inform the driver to drop you off at Luoyangmen Bus Station, then take a taxi for around 30 RMB to reach the site.

2. You can also take a minibus from Wushan County or Luomen Town in Wushan County to destinations such as Zhonglou Mountain or Dankou. Tickets generally cost around 5–10 RMB.
