Pingtung’s “Beidawushan Mountain” Reopens – Enjoy Sea of Clouds and Twin Ghost Lakes Scenery

Beidawushan Mountain, one of Taiwan’s Five Great Mountains, was temporarily closed due to severe damage to its hiking trails caused by torrential rains from Typhoon Fenghuang. The trails have recently been reopened after restoration efforts by the Pingtung Forest District Office. Officials also noted that now is the best time to visit Beidawushan, as the scenery is at its most beautiful.

Standing at an elevation of 3,092 meters, Beidawushan is the southernmost of Taiwan’s Five Great Mountains. It is regarded by Pingtung County as the mother of the Pingtung Plain and is known to the Paiwan people as “Meli-miligang,” meaning “dreamlike beauty,” making it a sacred mountain in their culture. For the past 17 years, Pingtung County Government has held the Dawushan Coming-of-Age Ceremony in the mountains, where young people from across the country participate in traditional Paiwan rites to mark the transition into adulthood. This has significantly boosted the mountain’s fame. In addition, the area boasts the largest pure forest of Taiwan hemlock in the country. The “Dawushan Nature Reserve” and “Twin Ghost Lakes Wildlife Habitat” within the region are among the most pristine natural landscapes in southern Taiwan.

The Forest District Office pointed out that the most breathtaking sight at Beidawushan is the sea of clouds during autumn and winter—especially at this time of year when mountain temperatures range between 17°C and 20°C, offering cool and pleasant weather. Moreover, along the trail from the trailhead to the summit, visitors can enjoy highlights such as a 14-adult-arm-span-wide ancient tree, the Japanese-era Dawsushrine, wind gaps, cloud waterfalls, and hemlock forests—all must-see mountain views for hikers.

However, the office also advises that the journey to Beidawushan is relatively long and involves significant altitude changes. Visitors should carefully assess their physical fitness, act according to their abilities, obtain the necessary mountain entry permits and insurance, seek assistance from certified mountain guides, and stay updated on weather forecasts.
