Due to days of heavy rain from Typhoons Krathon and Trami, sections of the Dasyueshan Hiking Trail at the 0.5K, 0.8K, and 2.4K marks have collapsed, with the 2.4K section being the most severely affected. In addition to an 8-meter loss of foundation, continuous heavy rain in the mountainous area has led to ongoing landslides. The Pingtung Forest District Office has closed the trail for emergency repairs, and the Hinoki Valley Lodge is also temporarily closed. The trail is expected to reopen in about a month at the earliest.
The day before yesterday, staff from the Pingtung Forest District Office discovered four landslide sites on the hiking trail. One of them falls under the jurisdiction of the Taiwu Township Office, while the other three are located near elevations of 1,500 and 1,800 meters. The 0.5K section has a 10-meter collapse, the 0.8K section an 8-meter collapse, and the 2.4K section has lost 8 meters of foundation, with falling rocks continuously occurring on the mountain.
Huang Miaoxiu, director of the Pingtung Forest District Office, said that it is still raining on the mountain. Enthusiastic hikers who went up found that the 2.4K section continues to collapse and must be bypassed via high detours or downcuts. The trail is completely interrupted, and repair crews have been called in, but the site conditions of the landslides must first be assessed before work can proceed.
She pointed out that apart from the mountain closure and road blockage, the Neipu Sub-bureau has been asked to have the Zhongxiao Police Station manage access. The public can check the latest updates on the “Taiwan Mountain Trails Recreation Network.” Those wishing to hike can also apply online. The trail is expected to reopen in about a month at the earliest, though any earlier reopening will be announced on the website.
The Pingtung Forest District Office noted that in addition to the Dasyueshan National Trail, it also manages the Chingshuiying National Trail, Weiliao Mountain Trail, Lilungshan Trail, Liuyi Mountain Trail, Shuangxi Tree Garden Trail, Shimen Mountain Trail, as well as the Gaoshifo and Mudan Pond Mountain Trails. It also oversees forest roads such as Xiaoguanshan, Tengzhi, Shishan, Chuyunshan, Shaxi, and Fangshanxi.
These trails are popular hiking routes in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area. Due to days of heavy rain, loose soil and rocks, uneven terrain, and the ongoing flood season with abundant rainfall, they are not suitable for outdoor hiking activities. Visitors are urged to postpone or proceed with caution when visiting mountainous areas to ensure safety.
