Former Residence of Luo Shengjiao

Tongzi Village, Songshan Township. It is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province. The residence faces west and was built along an east-west axis. It is a two-story wooden structure with double eaves, constructed in the 20th year of the Republic of China (1931). The site covers an area of approximately 800 square meters, with a building area of 200 square meters and an exhibition area of 120 square meters. In 1971, two stone tablets were erected: one has the inscription “Former Residence of Martyr Luo Shengjiao” on the front and a brief biography of the martyr on the back; the other bears an inscription by Kim Il-sung, Premier of North Korea: “The international communist spirit of Martyr Luo Shengjiao will forever coexist with the Korean people.” In 1978, a surrounding wall was added, and the site has been well preserved.

Luo Shengjiao Memorial Hall

Located at the west end of the Zijiang Bridge in the county town. It covers an area of 3,000 square meters, with a building area of 1,100 square meters. The hall was opened on April 22, 1985, the 54th anniversary of the martyr’s birth. It houses four statues, one model, 78 photographs, 51 pictures, and 114 physical objects. There are three exhibition rooms, covering a total area of 370 square meters. Since its opening, by the end of 1989, it had received 132,500 visitors from various provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions including Beijing and Xinjiang, as well as from counties and cities within the province, both group and individual. It has also hosted distinguished guests from North Korea, including Shen Renxia, Ambassador of North Korea to China, First Secretary and Councilor Kim Chang-gyu, and Kim Jin-seon, reporter for the North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun.

In 1988, it was recognized as an advanced unit in civilizational construction in Loudi Region and an advanced unit among external tourism and visiting sites in Hunan Province.

Luo Shengjiao, originally named Yu Cheng, was from Xiamao Township (now Songshan Township, Zhenshang), Eighth Autonomous District of the county. He was born in 1931 during the Republic of China era. As a child, he attended the local Weixin and Wende primary schools but had to drop out due to poverty. In the winter of the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945), he went to Suoli Town, Qiancheng County (now part of Jishou City). The following spring, he enrolled in the affiliated primary school of the Provincial No. 9 Normal School. In the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), he was admitted to the Provincial No. 9 Normal School, and after graduation, he advanced to the high school department of the Provincial No. 13 Middle School, where he changed his name to Shengjiao.
