When talking about Xiluo, one must mention the Xiluo Bridge. Spanning 1,939 meters, the bridge was originally designed by the Japanese but construction was delayed due to the outbreak of the Pacific War. After the war, with funding and technical assistance from the U.S., it was completed in 1953, becoming a vital north-south transportation hub and witnessing the history of the Republic of China in Taiwan. Though the “Xizhou Bridge” was built in 1992, what remains today is not only the majestic structure itself, but also irreplaceable history, stories of an era, and the enduring significance it holds in the hearts of the people of Xiluo.
The construction of Xiluo Dong Market utilized leftover materials from the building of the Xiluo Bridge during the U.S. aid period. It bears witness to the industrial history of the Xiluo area from the late Qing Dynasty, Japanese rule, through the post-WWII period, as well as the development of the Yanping Historical District, and is closely tied to the daily lives of the people of Xiluo. It is also part of the historical memory of the local community.
Some of the structures in Dong Market, which has existed since the Japanese colonial period, have been damaged, which is truly a pity.
Dong Market now embraces a retro style, with some cultural and creative businesses moving in, adding even more enjoyment to the visit.
Time may change everything, but let’s not forget its past contributions.
I love traveling with kids to help them discover new things—that’s probably the most fun part of traveling.
This place is like a treasure hunt, where memories of that era feel as vivid as yesterday.

The local people of Xiluo still working here also bring boundless emotion to the whole trip.
Of course, Xiluo’s old street is also worth strolling through. The diverse architectural styles bear witness to a page of Xiluo’s history.
The soy sauce of Xiluo Town is fragrant throughout Taiwan and has also created a glorious chapter for Xiluo soy sauce. For family trips, you can visit the Maruzo Soy Sauce Museum and Rueichun Soy Sauce Tourist Factory on Yanping Old Street. Click below for travel notes.

Rueichun Soy Sauce, with the largest soy sauce urn field in the country, adheres to traditional methods using black beans for pure fermentation, crafting the first richly flavored soy paste with handmade brewing wisdom. Established in 1921, it sold its first soy paste made from black beans and the muddy rice of Xiluo on the streets of Xiluo, laying the foundation for a century-long business.

Founded in 1982, the Buddha Art & Beauty Buddhist Art Society was established to preserve Taiwan’s temple worship culture, promote the origins and stories of deities, as well as the meaning of worshipping gods, embodying the religious spirit of encouraging virtue, and actively advocating modern Buddhist aesthetic art in daily life. Of course, this may be a bit profound for children, but as a blogger focused on family travel, I always hope that kids can benefit from different travel experiences as they grow up.
