Tainan Matou is a rather unique place. What can kids learn from a pomelo orchard, a dock, and a sugar factory?
Every journey starts with a direction, so we set the theme as “Diverse Learning and Cultivating Different Ways of Thinking.”
Upon arriving at Tainan Matou’s 5012 Pomelo Orchard, the owner Jiahan had already prepared a rich day for the children. The pomelo orchard is not just an orchard—it's an agricultural Disneyland where dreams come true. Over the years, it’s been heartening to see friends succeed. Even more importantly, it showcases Taiwan’s agriculture in a new light. From the blooming pomelo flowers in March to the Wen Dan harvest around White Dew (roughly before Mid-Autumn Festival), you witness plant growth and the diversification of agricultural products. Agriculture is no longer just about production—it’s now part of food and agriculture education. It reflects the relationship between nature and people, and brings everyone closer through shared experiences.

Jiahan talked about returning to his hometown to start a business and how he developed his ideas. In simple ways, he helped children understand the importance of ecology. Through group discussions, they came to realize how many steps are involved before the sweet fruits they enjoy at home reach their plates. The DIY pomelo-scented candle-making activity not only adds fun to the day but also ensures the memory of this Matou journey lingers long after it ends. A story never truly ends—it only begins. After the indoor session, how could we miss the hands-on farm experience? During winter, the trees are pruned as everyone waits for spring. When the orchard is filled with pomelo blossoms, it brings not just anticipation but hope—these blossoms help sustain families for the year. As the saying goes, to do a good job, one must first sharpen one’s tools. We let the kids pick their own tools but didn’t tell them what they’d be doing—the task was to handle the pruned branches. Some might have chosen the wrong tools, but using their own methods, they found ways to meet the farm’s requirements. Success sometimes depends on figuring things out yourself, and you never really know the outcome until the very end. After the experience, there’s always a hearty farmhouse meal. Watching the kids enjoy the food eagerly, one can only say:
It is a three-story building. The first floor features an exhibition area for unearthed cultural relics and an immersive experience zone depicting the former conditions of Dapeng Inner Sea. The second floor houses the legend of Madou Port and a collection of classical historical materials, while the third floor narrates the story of Dapeng Inner Sea. The Tsuen-Ya Sugar Refinery was originally built in 1912 by Japan’s Meiji Sugar Co., Ltd. as a sugar factory and head office in Taiwan. Thanks to Tainan’s ongoing efforts to “revitalize historic sites” and “repurpose unused spaces,” this place now exudes a strong artistic and cultural vibe. Every time I visit, I can’t help but think how fortunate the people of Tainan are—happiness, it seems, is really quite simple. It’s about slowing down and strolling through artsy spaces under blue skies and white clouds.
Over the years, as my little girl has grown, our way of traveling has also changed. But no matter where we go, she always asks many questions about the things around her. I believe that whether it’s parent-child outings or school trips, outdoor activities help nurture beautiful memories in young hearts. I also hope that as they grow up, these children will have their own bright futures. Related attractions in Madou District:
