Tainan is not just Zhengxing Street—here are ten must-visit attractions for food, fun, and everything in between

The Xinhua District in the suburbs of Tainan, besides being home to the Hutoupi Scenic Area, also features numerous hipster and family-friendly spots, including the Sweet Potato Eco Story House, Dakeng Leisure Farm, and Junjiu Streets and Villages. With its wealth of cultural heritage sites and Baroque-style architecture, Xinhua District also boasts a unique charm.

1. Xinhua Old Street
The Baroque-style buildings on Xinhua Old Street reflect the area’s historic ambiance, and to this day, many long-established traditional shops remain, selling everything from hardware and rice to classic Taiwanese snacks. It's a truly distinctive old street. Must-try treats on the old street include Yemaike Fried Chicken and sesame seed cakes.

2. Hutoupi Scenic Area

The Hutoupi Scenic Area is like Tainan’s backyard garden and a great spot for night scenery and stargazing. The Hu Yue Suspension Bridge within the park, which has served as a movie location, has become a popular dating spot for couples in recent years.

3. Guaguayuan Sightseeing Factory – Sweet Potato Eco Story House

The Sweet Potato Eco Story House introduces visitors to sweet potatoes and Taiwan’s sweet potato culture. Nearly twenty common varieties of sweet potatoes are planted throughout the park in potted displays and nursery beds, allowing guests to learn about their growth process, nutritional value, and the pesticide testing for safe sweet potatoes. Visitors can also look through glass windows into the sweet potato seedling cultivation rooms to better understand how the tubers grow.

4. Green Valley Siraya

Although Green Valley Siraya is a small attraction, it serves as a base for the Siraya people’s name rectification movement. Here, visitors can see the lifestyle and hunting tools of the Siraya tribe, with Elder Wan, who lives here, having long been dedicated to this cause. Nestled among green valleys, the area is filled with lush greenery, and the floating bridge in the middle of a small pond is always a draw for travelers looking to cross it.
