The restored Xinhua Botanical Garden in Tainan sees a boom in fireflies this autumn!

Listed as one of Tainan’s Eight Scenic Spots and Ten Attractions, the Xinhua National Botanical Garden has successfully bred over 2,000 fireflies in August due to its suitable ecological environment. It is expected that a stunning display of fireflies can be admired in the garden after mid-September. From the 19th to October 19th, the Xinhua National Botanical Garden is launching the “Crisp Autumn Firefly Viewing Event,” inviting the public to come and enjoy the spectacle.

Located in a low-altitude mountainous area, the Xinhua National Botanical Garden boasts Taiwan’s largest mahogany forest and is also known as the “Back Garden of Tainan.” Lin Ming-hsien, chairman of the Xinhua National Botanical Garden, stated that through planning and maintenance by the management team, recent efforts to breed fireflies in the five-hectare MZP pond have shown results due to the pollution-free and secluded surroundings. A significant emergence of fireflies is expected around mid-month, hence the event to invite the public to join in the celebration.

The “Crisp Autumn Firefly Viewing Event” offers three different itinerary options, all accompanied by professional ecological guides. In addition to watching fireflies dance among the trees, visitors may also spot nocturnal creatures such as land crabs, flying squirrels, and owls, making for an unforgettable night of forest exploration.
