Take a bus tour of Tainan’s “Rhine River” where blooming bougainvillea paints the riverside in purple and green

The Nanzhen Green Dyke in Tainan’s Xinhua District has long been known as the “Xinhua Rhine River.” Recently, the blooming bougainvillea along the dyke has added a touch of purple romance to the green pathway. The Tainan City Transportation Bureau suggests taking a light bus journey to explore the area — hop on the Green Line to easily visit Xinhua Old Street, Damshagang Cultural Park, and the Nanzhen Green Dyke.

The Xinhua Nanzhen Green Dyke is located about 100 meters south of the Wude Hall at Xinhua Old Street and the Damshagang Cultural Park. Originally part of the Jia-Nan Irrigation Canal's South Trunk Line, it was later developed into the “Nanzhen Green Dyke” riverside park, with added pavilions and green landscaping that create a tranquil green waterway scene, earning it the nickname “Xinhua Rhine River.”

The Tainan City Transportation Bureau noted that two bougainvillea trees at the Nanzhen Green Dyke have bloomed into gorgeous clusters of purple flowers, with petals carpeting the ground in vibrant purple — a truly stunning sight. In May, when the golden shower trees (Cassia fistula) are in bloom, the green dyke will take on yet another golden-rain appearance. Coupled with recently restored sites in Xinhua such as the Japanese-style wooden dormitories in Damshagang Cultural Park, the Damshagang Story House, the Yang Kui Literature Memorial Hall, and the Ou Wei Film Memorial Hall, travelers can take a delightful Tainan bus tour via the Green Line.
