Fan Changjiang Memorial Pavilion

The Fan Changjiang Memorial Pavilion is located east of the former Chinese Academy of Sciences' May Seventh Cadre School in Lüzhuang Village, Wagang Town, Queshan County. It was established to commemorate the eminent journalist and social activist Fan Changjiang. The two sides of the stone tablet are inscribed with phrases such as “Lived for the nation, his heroic spirit lives on” and “We will always remember you.”

In March 1969, Fan Changjiang, who had been labeled as “—”, was sent here for labor reform. On October 22, 1970, faced with endless physical and mental torment as well as a series of political events, the man who cherished honor above all else became disheartened. Ultimately, he took his own life by jumping into a clear spring, finding spiritual liberation in death at the age of 61. On December 27, 1978, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China posthumously rehabilitated him.

Fan Changjiang (1909–1970), originally named Fan Xitian, was from Zhaojiaba, Tianjia Town, Dongxing District (formerly Neijiang County), Neijiang City, Sichuan Province. At the age of 26, he began writing under the pen name “Changjiang” and became a renowned journalist. He achieved three firsts in the history of Chinese journalism: the first to truthfully report on the Long March of the Red Army; the first to reveal the inside story of the Xi’an Incident—; the first to interview “Red Capital” Yan’an and report on the Chinese Communist Party’s stance on the anti-Japanese national united front.
