Zhugou Ruins

The Zhugou Ruins are designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The Zhugou Ruins are located about 300 meters west of Xizhaimen in Zhugou Town, Queshan County. The site is situated on an elevated piece of land, approximately 4 meters above the ground, with a rural production road running through it, dividing the ruins into northern and southern sections. To the east of the site lies Zhugou Town, to the north is the Queshi-Mi Road, and to the southwest are cultivated fields. The ruins are approximately 250 meters long from east to west and about 200 meters wide from north to south. The site is currently well-preserved and is a key provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.

According to field investigations and research by cultural relics specialists, the distribution of the ruins is relatively uniform, with a cultural layer approximately 2.8 meters thick. The top 30 centimeters consist of farmland soil, while the layers below are composed of ash-gray soil and red-fired earth. Artifacts mainly include gray pottery, sand-tempered red pottery, and black pottery, along with some painted pottery. Common vessel types are dou (bean-shaped vessels) and li (tripod cauldrons), mostly decorated with corded patterns, and items such as stone sickles, stone axes, and pottery spinning wheels have also been unearthed. Based on the shapes of these artifacts, the site was used across multiple historical periods. The discovery of this site is of significant value for studying the Neolithic culture of southern Henan.

Zhugou Town: Located 30 kilometers west of Queshan County, Zhugou Town governs 15 administrative villages with a population of 28,000 and covers a total area of 185 square kilometers. It is an emerging small town with convenient transportation, increasingly complete infrastructure, and a well-established service system. As a veteran revolutionary base area, it is also known as the “Little Yan’an,” a title honoring its revolutionary heritage.

Zhugou Town boasts abundant natural resources and has identified 23 types of mineral deposits.
