Temple of Lord Lu

The Temple of Lord Lu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Temple of Lord Lu is located within Beiquan Temple in the northwest of Queshan County. In the fourth year of the Jianzhong era of the Tang Dynasty (783 AD), when the HuaiXi military governor rebelled against the Tang court, Yan Zhenqing, a veteran statesman who had served three emperors, was ordered to go and persuade the rebels to surrender. He was detained but remained unyielding, and was imprisoned at Longxing Temple in Cai Prefecture (present-day Runan). Fearing that detaining an imperial envoy might provoke public outrage, the rebel generals, in an attempt to cover their actions, secretly transferred him to Zifu Temple (present-day Beiquan Temple) and held him in confinement. In the first year of the Xingyuan era (784 AD) in August, he was strangled to death under a ginkgo tree within the temple, leaving behind a tragic elegy of the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty. Later generations built the Temple of Lord Lu to commemorate his noble character of uprightness and unwavering loyalty.
