Liangshan Water Margin Liquor Culture Experience Hall

The Liangshan Water Margin Liquor Culture Experience Hall is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Liangshan Water Margin Liquor Culture Experience Hall is recreated based on the descriptions in the original Water Margin novel. It features folk architecture styled after the Song Dynasty, bringing to life the unique local customs of the Northern Song period as well as the bold heroism of the Water Margin characters. Here, visitors can view thousands of wine vessels and utensils from primitive society to modern times across various dynasties, and personally experience the liquor-making process of the Song Dynasty, tasting the distinctive liquors of the Water Margin. They can see Wu Dalang selling baked wheat cakes, little Yunge peddling crisp pears, the charming Pan Jinlian, Sun Erniang hawking human flesh buns, and peddlers carrying a variety of goods from north and south. Visitors can also observe folk artisans demonstrating traditional crafts such as clay figurine molding, sugar blowing, paper cutting, spinning, embroidery, tinware crafting, and pottery making on-site. They can listen to the heartfelt musical performances of the flute and zither duet between the carefree Yan Qing and the capital’s famed courtesan Li Shishi, as well as folk storytelling acts like the fast-paced “Wu Song Fights the Tiger,” the zither-ballad “Yan Qing Challenges the Ring,” and the clapper-talk “Li Kui Causes a Ruckus at the Yamen.” Moreover, visitors may be honored with a drink offered by Song Jiang and other leaders of Liangshan, such as Lin Chong, Wu Song, Li Kui, and Lu Zhishen, and enjoy their classic short skits depicting scenes from the Water Margin.

Here, visitors can exchange RMB for copper coins or silver ingots, visit the wine counters of Zhu Gui and Gu Dasao to buy a few taels of liquor and several pounds of beef, learn the drinking customs and drinking games of the Liangshan heroes, and fully immerse themselves in the Water Margin spirit of “drinking from big bowls and eating meat in big chunks.” They can also try their hand at calligraphy, composing poetry in the style of Song Jiang, or dress up as characters from the Water Margin and engage in interactive performances with the cast.
