Liangshan Annihilation Battle Site Memorial Park
The Liangshan Annihilation Battle Site Memorial Park is a national AA-level tourist attraction, a Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, and a patriotic education base.
The Liangshan Annihilation Battle Site Memorial Park consists of two parts: the Liangshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery built in 1955 and the Liangshan Annihilation Battle Memorial Hall constructed in 2012, located respectively at No. 5 Yueshan Road, Liangshan County, and Dushan Village, Shuipo Subdistrict, Liangshan County. The Liangshan Annihilation Battle Site is among the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units announced by the People's Government of Shandong Province. The site’s mountain—Dushan—has an elevation of 23 meters and, together with the leisure square for martyrs’ memorial facilities built in 2013, covers a total area of 20 mu. Currently, the Liangshan Annihilation Battle Memorial Hall preserves battle relics such as captured Japanese military swords, helmets, belts, and some belongings of Eighth Route Army soldiers. Items collected by the Shandong Archives include the May 10, 1941 issue of the Masses Daily featuring oral accounts of Japanese captives from the Liangshan Annihilation Battle, as well as precious photos of Luo Ronghuan and Chen Guang commanding the battle.
The Liangshan Annihilation Battle Site has been successively designated as a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Liangshan County, a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Jining City, a Patriotic Education Base of Liangshan County, and a Patriotic Education Base of Jining City. In line with the principle of developing while utilizing, Liangshan County organizes annual visits for primary and secondary school students to provide education on ideals and beliefs, guiding them to remember the heroic feats of our soldiers in the Liangshan battles and further promote and carry forward the national spirit. In accordance with the requirements of the Shandong Provincial Department of Civil Affairs’ Approval Document on Agreeing to Build the Liangshan Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall at the Liangshan Martyrs’ Cemetery (Lu Min Han [2012] No. 147), the Liangshan County Party Committee and County Government initiated the construction of the Liangshan Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall at the original site of the Liangshan Annihilation Battle (located in Dushan Village, Shuipo Subdistrict Office, Liangshan County), with a total investment of over 7 million yuan. The memorial hall area covers approximately 7,500 m², consisting of a semi-enclosed main building and a central landmark tower. The three-story, 20-meter-high tower features a special exhibition hall on the ground floor and high-tech multimedia exhibition halls on the upper two levels. The design of the tower emphasizes vertical elements surrounding the circular structure, creating a simple yet powerful sense of commemoration. The vertical forms symbolize the weapons—rifles—used by soldiers to defend the country and its people, and also represent the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation. They stand closely united, standing together against foreign invaders. Since its opening, the Liangshan Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall has employed various means and formats to continuously expand the connotations of patriotic education and diversify educational activities. It has organized a wide range of theme events including oath-taking for Youth League membership, reaffirmation of Communist Party membership oaths, enlistment oaths for new soldiers, and themed class meetings. It has now become an important site for fostering patriotism and national spirit in our county, as well as an essential classroom for minors to learn revolutionary traditions.
The Liangshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery covers an area of over 41 mu and is situated at the southern foot of Qinglong Mountain on Shuibo Liangshan. With fixed assets exceeding 30 million yuan, the entire cemetery backs onto Qinglong Mountain, faces Tiger Head Cliff to the south, and features towering towers and steles, lush green lawns, and verdant pines and cypresses, presenting an extremely magnificent sight.
On June 3, 1990, the cemetery was approved by the People's Government of Shandong Province as a “Key Martyrs’ Memorial Buildings Protection Unit”; it was rated as a “Municipal-Level Garden-Style Unit” in 1993; listed as a “Patriotic Education Base” by Jining City in 1999; and recognized as an “Advanced Unit in the Management of Provincial Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Buildings” in 1999. The cemetery is the final resting place of 816 revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for the country, including 1 military officer, 3 regimental officers, 3 battalion officers, 9 company officers, 30 platoon officers, and 770 soldiers (374 named martyrs and 396 unnamed martyrs). Notable figures include revolutionary martyrs such as Yang Jingzhai, Tian Zizhen, Du Yuehua, and Zhao Yunde.
The cemetery is divided into three sections: the memorial area, the martyrs’ tomb area, and the greening area. The memorial area includes the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Tower, the Martyrs’ Memorial Hall, the Liangshan Battle Memorial Stele, the stele for martyr Yang Jingzhai—a member of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Region Senate—the stele for martyrs who perished in Zhangqiu County, the “Light of the Nation” stele, and pavilions. The martyrs’ tomb area houses the remains of 816 martyrs and is planted with pines, cypresses, and various trees. The greening area is adorned with flowers such as roses, peonies, and tree peonies.
The Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Tower, built in 1957, is the central structure of the cemetery. The tower stands 25.5 meters tall, with a five-pointed red star of 0.9-meter diameter embedded at the top. The front of the tower bears seven gilded characters: “Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Stele.” The east side features an inscription by the Liangshan County Committee of the Communist Party of China: “Bones are exchanged for the fruits of victory, blood nurtures the flowers of freedom.” The west side displays an inscription by the Liangshan County People’s Government: “The spirits of the revolutionary martyrs will live forever in the hearts of the people.” The back bears an inscription by the Liangshan County Military Service Bureau: “The spirit of striving for the liberation of the people will be immortal.” The couplet at the base reads: “By the stones of Liangshan, we recount revolutionary tales; in the hearts of the people, we forever cherish the legacy of the martyrs.”
The Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Hall, built in 1976 and completed in 1977, is located at the highest point of the northern end of the cemetery. Covering an area of 560 square meters, it is a modern structure with seven bays, five corridors, and two side rooms. The couplet on the gate reads: “Loyal hearts shine upon mountains and rivers; glorious history illuminates the sun and moon.” At the center of the hall is displayed a list of the names of 1,289 martyrs from Liangshan County. The east and west sides feature two large oil paintings, surrounded by exhibits depicting famous battles that took place within Liangshan and the life stories of notable martyrs, along with the portraits and personal belongings of the revolutionary martyrs.
The Liangshan Battle Memorial Stele is located 30 meters west of the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Tower and is constructed from granite and bluestone. It is a regular quadrilateral prism, 6.7 meters tall and covering an area of 20 square meters. Erected in 1992 by the Liangshan County Committee and County Government to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the victory of the Liangshan Battle, the front of the stele bears seven gilded characters: “Liangshan Battle Memorial Stele.” The back describes the course of the Liangshan Battle. The east and west sides are inscribed with calligraphic works by more than 20 leaders, including Ouyang Wen, Dai Runsheng, Yan Xuezeng, and Duan Junyi.

The stele for martyr Yang Jingzhai, a member of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Region Senate, is located 30 meters east of the memorial tower. Constructed from bluestone, the 6.3-meter-tall stele was erected in December of the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945). It was established in 1946 by the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Region Government, the Border Region Provisional Congress, and the masses of five counties—Nanwang, Kunshan, Wenshang, and Dongping—to commemorate the famous anti-Japanese hero Yang Jingzhai. The front of the stele features four running script characters by Xu Daben: “Famed in Lake and Mountain.” The back records the main achievements of martyr Yang Jingzhai. The sides are engraved with elegiac writings by leaders such as Yang Yong, Song Renqiong, Duan Junyi, and Wan Li. Yang Yong wrote: “Carry on the martyrs’ legacy and fight ceaselessly.” Wan Li inscribed: “In memory of Mr. Yang, a loyal guardian of the people.” Yang Jingzhai, whose given name was Chuanwen, courtesy name Anting, and alias Jingzhai, was born in 1888 in Yangdukou Village, Xia’anshan Town, Liangshan County. He was admitted to the Law Department of China University in Beijing in 1913 and was a patriotic intellectual who supported and participated in the revolutionary cause of the Communist Party during the democratic revolution period.
The Zhangqiu County Martyrs’ Memorial Stele is located 50 meters southwest of the memorial hall. In April 1945, the former Anti-Japanese People’s Government of Zhangqiu County erected this stele to commemorate the martyrs who died during the eight-year War of Resistance. Originally located in Shimiao Village, Yinshan Commune, it was relocated here during the construction of the memorial park. The stele is an octagonal prism, 6 meters tall with a round top, constructed from bluestone. The front is inscribed with “Zhangqiu County Martyrs’ Memorial Stele.” The surrounding area features inscriptions by representatives from all walks of life, such as “Your sacrifice is heavier than Mount Tai; your spirits gather for the people.” The back bears inscriptions by Song Renqiong, Yang Yong, Wang Hongkun, and others: “Your blood bought the liberation of the masses; your spirit will live forever in the hearts of the people.”
To further explore the red cultural resources of the Liangshan Annihilation Battle and build a red culture education base, on November 27, 2014, the Liangshan County Party Committee Standing Committee approved the expansion plan of the Liangshan Annihilation Battle Memorial Park, with an investment of 50 million yuan. The plan involves restoring the Dushan mountain body, rebuilding the 115th Division Command Post, and reconstructing the inn and lime kiln where the Japanese forces were completely annihilated. The project includes a museum, office buildings, a live-action simulation area, a story corridor, and a sculpture group.
On June 3, 1990, the Liangshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was approved by the People's Government of Shandong Province as a “Key Martyrs’ Memorial Buildings Protection Unit”; it was rated as a “Municipal-Level Garden-Style Unit” in 1993; listed as a “Patriotic Education Base” by Jining City in 1999; and recognized as an “Advanced Unit in the Management of Provincial Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Buildings” in 1999. In December 2013, the Liangshan Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall was awarded the title of “Jining City Patriotic Education Base” by the Jining Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department.
