Dragon King Temple at Shengjinggang

The Dragon King Temple at Shengjinggang is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Dragon King Temple at Shengjinggang is located northeast of Xiaohé Village, Hùcūn Town, about 5 kilometers northwest of Handan City. It lies south of the Handan-Wuhan Highway, west of Zishan Mountain, and north of the Ancient Stone Dragon Scenic Area. Covering an area of 15,000 square meters, the temple complex is a group of ancient buildings in the Yuan Dynasty style, with a total construction area of 90,000 square meters. Its main structures include a theater stage, mountain gate, front hall, rear hall, bell tower, east corridor, east side hall, Temple to the Goddess Who Grants Sons, west corridor, side hall, and Temple to the Goddess of Vision, among others, all laid out symmetrically and uniformly.

The “Sacred Well” is located in the courtyard in front of the front hall. It is over ten feet deep, and the water inside remains clear as a mirror year-round. The water level stays consistent regardless of drought or flood, hence the name “Sacred Well.” Unlike other Dragon King Temples, this one enshrines not a fierce-looking male dragon king, but a kind-faced female dragon deity, commonly known as the “Nine-Dragon Sacred Mother.” In earlier times, the Temple to the Nine-Dragon Sacred Mother was very famous, and old records from Handan County referred to it as the “foremost temple in the region.” There is a metal water-regulating talisman plaque inside the well, which is believed to be highly effective for rain prayers, making the site very popular among worshippers. Among the ancient Ten Scenic Spots of Handan, it was known as the “Fragrant Market of Linggang.”

In October 1995, Shengjinggang was listed as a municipal-level key cultural relics protection unit in Handan; in February 2002, it was designated as a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit in Hebei Province; and in April 2009, it was rated as a national AA-level tourist attraction.

By public transport: Within Handan City, take bus No. 76 and get off at Guohé Intersection, then walk south to reach the site; alternatively, take bus No. 10, 15, 39, 53, or 808, get off at Hùcūn Station, and walk south.

By car: 10 kilometers northwest of Handan City, on the north side of the Handan-Wuhan Highway.
