Taiwan is home to numerous unique churches, which often attract significant tourist crowds. The“Kikuo Pai Church”was completed as early as the 1960s. Its building materials were sourced from nearby Bat Cave stone, hand-picked and carried up the mountain by local residents, and it was designed with the concept of the “Key to Heaven,” featuring a distinctive entrance style. It has been listed as one of the Cultural Affairs Council’s “Top 100 Historical Sites” and was also selected as one of the Ministry of the Interior’s “Top 100 Religious Sites in Taiwan” in 2013.

This church is the only one in Taiwan built entirely from stone. Half a century ago, it took great effort and dedication to overcome numerous challenges, using natural materials and hand-carved craftsmanship to create this beautiful European-style old church. Its exterior features a mosaic stone wall that may appear rough but is highly artistic. This church was also a filming location for the idol drama “Meteor Garden,” and it has now become a popular spot for couples to take wedding photos.

The concept of the “Key to Heaven” inspired the design of the church’s entrance, with its exquisitely fine lines. After 40 or 50 years of exposure to wind, sun, and rain, it remains intact. However, due to limited interior space, the church once faced the threat of demolition. But after negotiations and coordination, it has now been repurposed as an exhibition room for a cultural museum, preserving the original appearance of the old church.
