The Shunshantun Site is located on the Western Hill of Shunshantun in Kangping County, now known as Pearl Mountain. It was discovered in 1973 and excavated in trial digs in 1977. The site dates back 3,000 years. There are also tombs from the Khitan, Liao-Jin, and Yuan dynasties. At Sun Lianyu’s residence in Xinchengbao Village, Maquanzi Village, Erniusuokou Township, a Yuan dynasty tomb was unearthed when he dug up earth five meters in front of his house. According to Sun Lianyu, he was digging soil to use as manure when he unearthed horse bells and stirrups—all broken—and discarded them at the time, keeping only two bronze bottles which he sent to the cultural relics office. The bronze bottles are typical artifacts of the Yuan dynasty, thus indicating that this was a Yuan-era tomb. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, a hoard was discovered in 1981 at Xiakanzi Village, Erniusuokou Township. Some of the coins were lost at the time of excavation, leaving a net weight of 1.42 kilograms. Among the coins was one Japanese “Kan’ei Tsūhō.” It is now a protected cultural heritage site at the provincial level in Liaoning.
The Xiaotazi City Site (including the Pagoda Temple Pagoda) is located in Xiaotazi Village, Haoguantun Township, Kangping County, dating back to the Liao Dynasty. To the south, undulating hills stretch in a southwestward direction. The terrain to the west and north is slightly lower, followed by rolling hills extending northwestward. Today, people have built houses along the hillsides, forming a village. The site is named Xiaotazi after the Liao Dynasty Buddhist pagoda located outside the west gate of the city. Fifty meters east of the pagoda lies the Qizhou City Site. The construction of this ancient city confirms that this area has been a vital east-west passage since ancient times—a crossing point along the Liao River.
