Nanxiong Maofeng Peak Forest Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Maofeng Peak Forest Farm is located in the northwest of Nanxiong County, bordering Dayu County of Jiangxi Province to the north and northwest, and adjacent to the Xinyue Forest Farm of Maofeng Town in the east. By road, the distance from Fangkeng, the farm’s headquarters, to Nanxiong City is 42 kilometers. The area enjoys a mild climate year-round with abundant rainfall and snowfall in winter, presenting a rare snowy landscape in the south.

In addition to timber forests, the forest farm boasts a rich variety of trees. There are 133 known species of timber trees and 12 types of bamboo: moso bamboo, set bamboo, golden bamboo, tide bamboo, ancient-eye golden bamboo, yellow bamboo, bitter bamboo, hemp bamboo, and others. The farm’s medicinal plants include 168 known species: 47 root and rhizome types, 65 whole herb types, 16 flower and leaf types, 27 fruit and seed types, and 13 vine and bark types—such as precious herbs like notoginseng, coptis, gentian, prickly ash, and polygonum multiflorum. The farm features abundant flowers and plants in all seasons, with many areas retaining their pristine forest appearance. Wild fruits are also found everywhere, including kiwi berries, luohanguo, and peach kernels. Additionally, Maofeng tea bushes grow scattered across the mountains, with some old trees having trunks over 20 centimeters in diameter. Tea leaves are harvested around Qingming Festival to make tea, which has a very bitter taste but serves as an excellent summer cooling and detoxifying beverage.

The forest farm enjoys birdsong and floral scents all year round, with birds and animals roaming the woods. In the 1950s, traces of South China tigers were found here, and herds of mountain oxen once roamed. Today, while tigers and oxen are gone, the forest still echoes with birdsong, and visitors may occasionally spot squirrels and roe deer. The farm has numerous blooming flowers that fill the air with fragrance throughout the seasons. The main locally grown wildflowers include orchids, Beijiang magnolia, and osmanthus. Orchids grow along streambanks and in shaded mountain valleys, with five known varieties discovered. Osmanthus is scattered across areas such as Fangkeng and Xiaogui Keng, with some trees over a hundred years old. When they bloom in August, their fragrance spreads far and wide.

The Maofeng Peak Forest Farm may lack dramatic or perilous scenery, but it offers a serene and elegant environment. Far from towns and villages, the farm is surrounded by overlapping peaks and boasts fresh air, making it an ideal place described as “verdant mountains untouched by dust.” The Ling River, which flows through the entire farm, has six cascading power stations that form six uniquely scenic high-mountain lakes. With its beautiful mountains and clear waters, it is also a great spot for boating and fishing. Combining modern civilization with pristine landscapes, Maofeng Peak stands at 1,058 meters above sea level, rising amidst the lofty mountains. Climbing to the peak offers breathtaking views—whether watching the sunrise or gazing at the sea of clouds—rivaling those of Mount Lu or Danxia.

The fame of the Maofeng Peak Forest Farm lies not only in its landscapes but also in its history. Located in the border region between Guangdong and Jiangxi, the densely forested mountains were once the site where revolutionary leaders such as Xiang Ying, Chen Yi, and Chen Pixian waged a three-year guerrilla war. The “Beishan Incident,” where traitors ambushed the guerrilla command post, took place at Longxi Stone in Maofeng. Countless revolutionary veterans, including Chen Yi, wrote glorious chapters in China’s revolutionary history here. Many years later, veterans revisited the area and left behind poems and essays, reflecting on their heroic deeds of the past.
