Tired of the little yellow duck? Head to the observation deck for a citywide view – Kaohsiung also offers an intellectual travel experience

Seeing the yellow rubber duck can also be paired with an intellectual ecological and cultural journey through Kaohsiung. The Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau recommends starting your weekend holiday with nature and art—visit the city’s educational sites such as the Native Plant Garden and Zhongdu Wetland to explore the mysteries of natural ecology in a living museum. Then head to Pier-2 Art Center to see the yellow rubber duck, and end your trip at the Love Observation Deck near the Martyrs' Shrine on Shoushan Mountain, completing a relaxing weekend getaway.

During the holiday, you can visitthe Native Plant Garden,Taiwan’s first green park themed around native plants. The park features major ecological landscapes such as the Taiwan Native Aquatic Plant Teaching Area, Mangrove Exhibition Area, Waterfront Plant Area, Teaching and Folk Plant Area, Southern Low-Elevation Plant Area, Elevated Coral Reef Area, Forest Bathing Area, and Netted Greenhouse Restoration Area. Currently, the garden is home to over 60 species of 45 families of Taiwan’s native plants, making the entire park a living museum of Taiwanese flora. It was opened on March 12, 1994, Arbor Day.

Next, head toYi Bai Er Western Pastry Factory,The name “Yi Bai Er” (literally “eat 120”) may not sound like a typical bakery at first, breaking conventional expectations. The name actually comes from the Hokkien phrase used in birthday wishes, meaning “live to 120 years old.” Here, “eat” (呷) is not about dining but about “reaching” or “living” – a blessing for long life and health. The name was chosen for its auspicious meaning, not because items cost 120 dollars as some might assume. The shop offers a variety of delicious pastries.

Zhongdu Wetland ParkHere you can easily spend an entire afternoon. As Kaohsiung’s 18th wetland park, it won the Environmental Restoration First Prize in the 2012 Global Excellence Construction Awards. It combines regional tourism resources with a comprehensive mangrove restoration and waterfront ecological management system, serving as a landmark of tropical imagery in Taiwan. The park features three suspension bridges, a mangrove ecological restoration area, a water corridor, and a native forest ecological island. It preserves the original timber transport channel connected to natural seawater, using the unique mix of fresh and saltwater to restore Kaohsiung’s once-vanished mangrove ecosystem and coastal woodlands. This connects the Love River basin with the wetland ecology, creating a habitat suitable for migratory birds.

Besides the above attractions, don’t miss the recently super-popularPier-2 Art Zone,then go toGlory Pierto see the yellow rubber duck. “Pier-2” is located in the third harbor basin of Kaohsiung Harbor. Originally a regular port warehouse, it has now been transformed into a unique open art space that provides artists and students with a creative environment. It also hosts various art and cultural events on a regular basis, spearheading a new wave of southern art in Kaohsiung. The globally popular yellow rubber duck—its first stop in Taiwan—is at Glory Pier in Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area, where you can enjoy its adorable and whimsical presence along the harbor waterfront.

The Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau also highly recommendsthe LoveObservation Deck,located at the LOVE Plaza next to the Martyrs' Shrine on Shoushan Mountain. From here, you can enjoy the night view and take in the vast urban seascape of Kaohsiung Harbor while soaking in the romantic atmosphere of this love-themed observation deck.
