Kongjiang National Wetland Park
Kongjiang National Wetland Park is a national-level wetland park.
"Hundred Islands Lake" is a large artificial lake formed after the construction of the Kongjiang Reservoir. Built in the 1960s, the Kongjiang Reservoir is the largest man-made reservoir in Nanxiong. It has a catchment area of 79.4 square kilometers, a maximum water storage capacity of 69.43 million cubic meters, and can irrigate 110,000 mu of farmland. The lake area features 263 islands of varying sizes, scattered like jade-colored silk balls on the emerald waters, which is why it is called "Hundred Islands Lake." Surrounded by verdant mountains and lush forests, the clear lake water reflects the surrounding peaks, resembling gleaming jade. Although Hundred Islands Lake has not yet been officially developed as a tourist attraction, it still attracts many visitors who come to enjoy the scenic beauty—whether admiring the landscape, swimming, or simply reveling in the lake’s unspoiled natural charm.
Kongjiang Wetland Park is located in Wujing Town, about 32 kilometers northeast of Nanxiong City. On March 30, 2011, it was approved as a National Wetland Park by the State Forestry Administration.
The wetland park mainly includes the Kongjiang Reservoir, sections of the reservoir upstream and downstream, and the surrounding areas. The park stretches irregularly from east to west in a narrow corridor shape. Its northernmost point lies at the junction between Nanxiong City and Xinfeng County, Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, along the upper reaches of the Kongjiang. Its southernmost point extends to Provincial Highway 342. The park’s boundary encompasses the Kongjiang Reservoir and the first ridge line of the surrounding mountains or nearby roads; where residential areas or farmlands lie within these ridges or roadways, mountain paths serve as the demarcation. The entire park spans approximately 6.8 kilometers from east to west and 5.3 kilometers from north to south, covering a planned total area of 1,667.9 hectares.
The wetland park features an intact ecosystem structure, including inflowing streams, the reservoir itself, marshes, floodplain wetlands, islets, sandbars, and surrounding forest, all contributing to its unique natural landscape and rich biodiversity. It is home to numerous species, including 34 nationally protected animals, 22 endangered species listed in China's Red Data Book, and 14 species of plants from 12 genera and 13 families under state protection. The Kongjiang Reservoir is dotted with numerous islands, like scattered pearls on a jade plate, forming over a hundred branching waterways that create a landscape of lakes within lakes, and mountains beyond mountains—an intricate, serene scenery of mountains embracing waters. It is known as "Hundred Islands Lake" and is also called the “Number One Reservoir in Northern Guangdong.” Particularly noteworthy is the extensive typical Danxia landform exposed around the reservoir. This stunning juxtaposition of Danxia terrain and aquatic environment makes it the only water-reflecting Danxia scenic area in Guangdong. The park receives nearly 100,000 visitors annually, generating tourism revenue of over 10 million yuan.
The wetland park is situated at the source of the North River—specifically, the upper reaches of the Kongjiang, which is a trans-regional river system spanning both Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces. Scientific and systematic efforts to protect and restore river-source wetlands here play a crucial exemplary role in researching and developing methods and technologies for cross-regional river-source wetland conservation in China. The Kongjiang Reservoir boasts abundant, unpolluted water resources. Drinking water for residents both within and around the reservoir comes from mountain streams or the reservoir itself. With a normal water level of 195.77 meters and a corresponding storage capacity of 58.25 million cubic meters, the reservoir irrigates 11,533 hectares of farmland. This wetland plays a vital role in flood control, runoff regulation, climate improvement, pollution control, safeguarding industrial and agricultural water use, and maintaining ecological security.
Wujing Town: Located in the northeastern part of Nanxiong City, Guangdong, Wujing Town covers an area of 158 square kilometers and governs 22 village committees and one neighborhood committee, with a population of nearly 55,000. It is the largest township in Nanxiong and is classified as a revolutionary base area. In 2002, it was designated by the provincial government as one of Guangdong Province’s 268 central towns. The town enjoys convenient transportation—it is 42 kilometers north of Xinfeng County, Jiangxi Province, as well as National Highway 105 and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, and 31 kilometers south of Nanxiong City and National Highway 323. Provincial Highway S342 runs through the entire town. Thanks to its strategic location, Wujing has seen rapid development in small-town construction and has become a hub serving a population of 150,000 across five eastern towns of Nanxiong...
