Former Site of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China

The former site of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The former site of Yaokeng is located in Yaokeng Village, Likou Town, Nanxiong City.

In 1938, after the fall of Guangzhou, the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China relocated from Shaoguan to Yaokeng Village in the Sixth Bao of Chengqing Township, Nanxiong County (the current site) in the winter of 1939, in order to facilitate the anti-Japanese salvation movement among the masses. Committee Secretary Zhang Wenbin, Organization Minister Li Dalin, and Propaganda Minister Tu Zhennong (who later defected) all came to Yaokeng to carry out work. The Guangdong Provincial Committee led the people of the province in the armed struggle against Japan, and Nanxiong became the rear base for Guangdong's resistance. In July 1940, the provincial committee headquarters moved to Hongwei in Shixing.

The site consists of five buildings of varying sizes, all of which are made of earth and wood, with a total floor area of about 200 square meters and building heights of around 4 meters. The first room from the road side was the original office, with an area of about 50 square meters; the other four rooms were used for rest and secret meetings. Over the past decade, to protect this revolutionary site, the local residents originally living in these houses have moved out, leaving them vacant for visitors. The buildings have deteriorated severely.

In January 2009, during a special inspection in Shaoguan, then-Guangdong Party Secretary Wang Yang instructed that efforts be made to preserve the sites of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Northern Guangdong authorities. In March, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee decided to restore, protect, and utilize the sites of the Guangdong Provincial Committee and the Northern Guangdong authorities, and also decided to build a corresponding historical exhibition hall. On the morning of June 29, 2010, the completion ceremony for the restoration of the Guangdong Provincial Committee and Northern Guangdong Provincial Committee sites and the construction of the exhibition hall was grandly held in Shaoguan.

On May 10, 2010, the three former provincial committee sites—Yaokeng, Hongwei, and Wuliting—were approved and announced by the provincial government as part of the sixth batch of upgraded cultural relics protection units. On June 29, the provincial committee sites and the exhibition hall were designated as the "Guangdong Provincial Patriotic Education Base," "Guangdong Provincial Party History Education Base," and "Shaoguan Municipal Patriotic Education Base."
