Red Army slogans and cartoons in Yuxian Village, Nannong Town

(1) Preserved on the upper floor of Wang Ruidong’s residence in Yuxian Village, Nannong Town, Nanxiong County. Created in the summer of 1932, shortly after the “Shuikou Campaign.” There are two slogans. One measures 1.3 meters in length and 0.90 meters in width, with characters sized 8×6 cm. The content reads:

Comrades of the Guangdong Army, you come from working and peasant families—do not fight for the warlords, fight for the workers and peasants!

Comrades of the Guangdong Army, rise up in revolt—take your guns and join the Red Army!

Welcome comrades of the Guangdong Army to join the Red Army!

Comrades of the Guangdong Army, if you want your elderly mothers to have food to eat, you must rise up in revolt!

Treat the wounded and sick soldiers of the White Army!

Give priority treatment to captured soldiers of the White Army!

The other slogan is 1 meter in length and 0.90 meters in width, with characters sized 8×10 cm. The content reads:

Peasants, overthrow the local tyrants and distribute the land!

Eliminate the enemies of Guangdong!

Down with all imperialism!

Oppose the Second World War!

Eliminate the landlord militias!

Red Army I45 A

The walls of the building also bear slogans such as: “Oppose the Japanese imperialism sending troops to the Three Eastern Provinces, oppose imperialist attacks on the Soviet Union.” and “Overthrow the Kuomintang government, establish a Soviet government, oppose forced conscription.” According to local elders, the Red Army only passed through Nannong once, during the summer of 1932, shortly after the Shuikou Campaign. All the Red Army slogans and cartoons in Yuxian Village were left at that time.

(2) Preserved on the west wall of the water tower in Yuxian Village, Yuxian Village. The white lime characters span 20 meters in length, with individual characters 1.3 meters in height and 1 meter in width, positioned 2.5 meters above the ground, and are unsigned.

The content reads:

Peasants, organize guerrilla units, seize the weapons of the landlords!

On the east wall of the same building is another slogan with similar font and size:

Confiscate the weapons of the gentry, landlords, and militia forces

The signature at the end reads “Red Army I45.”

(3) The Red Army wall cartoon in Yuxian Village, Nannong Town is preserved on the wall of Wang Rui’an’s residence in Yuxian Village, Nannong Town, Nanxiong. The image is 1 meter in height and 0.80 meters in width. The cartoon depicts a foreigner holding a whip in the left hand and a rope in the right, leading a dog (labeled as He Yingqin). The foreigner is 52 cm tall, the dog (running dog) is 14 cm long, and the turtle is 10 cm long. In the upper right corner of the image are the words “Oppose the imperialist warlords He Yingqin and Chen Jitang (Tang) attacking the Soviet Area and the Red Army.” The characters are 5 cm in size. The scolding words coming from the foreigner’s mouth to the dog were painted over by the artist during creation and are no longer legible.

In 1982, the Nanxiong County People’s Government designated it as a cultural heritage site.

(3) Preserved on the wall of Wang Xianyue’s old residence in Canglang Fengkeng Village, Kongjiang Town, Nanxiong. The entire slogan is 1.40 meters in length, written in black ink with generally clear characters, though some are blurred or missing. It was created in 1935.

The content is:

Spring famine has come, organize armed struggle against killings—landlords must not be allotted land. Drive out the corrupt elements from the Soviet area. Implement labor protection laws, carry out the democratic revolution.

Down with the Kuomintang that colludes with imperialism and betrays workers and peasants.

Down with the Kuomintang that deceives the people—distribute the rice and property of landlords and gentry to peasants, support the Red Army and the Soviet government.

(4) Preserved on the outer wall of the former residence of Wang Xianyue in Fengkeng Village, Canglang, Changlang. The slogan is 3.30 meters long in total, with the text largely legible though a few characters are somewhat blurred. Written in 1935.

The content is:

□……□Soldiers, rise up against the Kuomintang propagandists who betray the people

(5) Preserved on the wall of the building of the former residence of Wang Xianyue in Fengkeng Village, Canglang, Kongjiang Town, Nanxiong City. The slogan is 3 meters long in total, written in black ink with generally clear text, though a few characters at the beginning are missing. Written in 1935.

The content is:

□……Brothers of the self-defense corps and the workers’ and peasants’ corps, join hands and enlist in the Red Army and the Red Guards. Provide relief to the families of Red Army fighters who have sacrificed their lives. Prohibit the beating and cursing of soldiers.

The slogan is 6.3 meters long in total, written in black ink with generally clear text, though a few characters at the beginning are missing. Written in 1935.

The content is:

Welcome lower-ranking soldiers of the White Army to join the Red Army.

Brothers of the White Army come from worker and peasant backgrounds—do not work for □□□ warlords against workers and peasants.

Brothers of the White Army, to get your unpaid wages, only □……□ by rising up in revolt.

What have the brothers of the White Army gained after years of bitter fighting?

(7) Preserved on the outer wall of the former residence of Wang Xianyue in Fengkeng Village, Canglang, Kongjiang Town, Nanxiong City. The slogan is 17.4 meters long in total, written in white lime with relatively clear text. Written in 1934.

The content is:

Down with landlords and gentry—only by distributing land can peasants have food to eat.

Oppose the White Army’s attack on the Red Area.
