Shangshuo Pagoda

Shangshuo Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

Shangshuo Pagoda is located on Wuzhi Mountain in Shangshuo Village, Youshan Town, Nanxiong City. It was built during the Qing Dynasty. The pagoda has a hexagonal floor plan and is a seven-story hollow pavilion-style structure. It stands 19.9 meters tall, with a base circumference of 15.96 meters and a diameter of 5 meters. The pagoda is constructed from blue bricks measuring 31 cm in length, 16 cm in width, and 6 cm in thickness. The brick joints are staggered and bonded with lime mortar. Each level of the pagoda features corbelled eaves using diamond-shaped and eave-lifting bricks. The first level has one door, 2.4 meters high and 0.6 meters wide; the second level has open windows on the north and south sides, and blind windows on the other sides; the third level has open windows on the east and west sides, and blind windows on the north and south sides. The arrangement of open and blind windows alternates similarly on higher levels. The interior originally had a wooden staircase, now destroyed, and the finial is shaped like a gourd.

Legend says the pagoda was built to suppress evil spirits. Perched on a mountain ridge, it can be seen from miles around. The pagoda has a well-proportioned design, with its body gradually tapering from the bottom up and each level decreasing evenly in height, giving it a sturdy and elegant appearance. The pagoda remains well-preserved and was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Nanxiong County in 1982. On April 19, 2019, Shangshuo Pagoda was listed as part of the ninth batch of cultural relic protection units of Guangdong Province.

Shangshuo Village: The Shangshuo Village Committee is located in the eastern part of Nanxiong City, covering a total area of 8.46 square kilometers. It includes 3,022 mu of arable land, of which 2,140 mu are paddy fields and 882 mu are dry land. The village administers 26 villager groups and one natural village, with 603 households and a population of 3,344. The village collective earns an annual income of 15,890 yuan. There are currently six village cadres and 53 party members.
