Kibitsu Shrine

Kibitsu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It is classified as an "Ichi-no-Miya" (primary shrine) in the Engishiki records and serves as the chief shrine of the Kibi region. This historic shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, and its main hall was built in 1425 in the distinctive Kibitsu architectural style, featuring two "hibi-irimoya" (winged hip-and-gable) roof structures placed side by side to form a single large roof. The structure has been designated as a National Treasure by the Japanese government.

Kibitsu Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Okayama City. The main deity enshrined here is Ō-Kibitsuhiko-no-Kami, a legendary general believed to have pacified the region where the shrine now stands and is credited with laying the foundation for Kibi culture as it is known today. The shrine preserves a unique religious ritual called the "Narukama Shinji," a form of divination where the sound of a kettle is interpreted to predict whether prayers will be fulfilled. Additionally, the shrine is associated with folklore about demon exorcism and is said to be the inspiration behind the well-known Japanese tale of "Momotaro" (the story of a boy born from a peach who grows up to defeat evil ogres).
