When it comes to Okayama, Japan’s summer fruit kingdom, it may not be as famous as Tokyo, Osaka, or Hokkaido, but mention Momotarō—the boy who bravely fought demons with his dog, monkey, and pheasant—and it’s sure to stir up childhood memories, and the hometown of Momotarō is in Okayama, too！The largest summer festival in Okayama — the Momotarō Festival — will be held on August 3rd and 4th by the Asahi River in Okayama. There will be a beautiful fireworks display and dance performances with performers wearing demonic face paint. At this demon-themed festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, tourists can also experience being made up to look like demons.

While visiting Okayama for the Momotarō Festival, don’t miss the local Momotarō Museum！Located in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, this Momotarō Museum is based on the story of Momotarō. It not only offers plenty of information but also features many fun interactive gadgets that challenge our everyday perceptions. A particularly unique attraction is a cave exploration area resembling a haunted house, centered around the Demon Island from the story. Walking through the pitch-black cavern, you never know when a demon might leap out—it’s thrilling and exciting.

In the colorful summer night, besides the grand Momotarō Festival, one of the three great gardens of Japan—Kōraku-en—will also host a two-week nighttime event called “Fantasy Garden” from August 2nd to 18th. During the event, Kōraku-en will be open in the evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the lighting starting at 7:30 PM. In addition to the lighting displays, there will also be garden concerts and special meals offered.
