Ohara Museum of Art

The Ohara Museum of Art is located in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, Chugoku region of Japan. It was established with the generous support of Kurashiki entrepreneur Ohara Magosaburo and through the meticulous selection of painter Kojima Torajiro, who brought works by renowned European painters to Kurashiki to create a collection of world-class art. Unfortunately, Kojima Torajiro passed away due to illness in 1929, and Ohara Magosaburo alone opened the museum in 1930.

The Ohara Museum of Art is Japan’s first private art museum focused on Western art. In its core area, the "Main Building," visitors have the opportunity to admire masterpieces by world-renowned artists such as El Greco, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse, Segantini, Picasso, Modigliani, Giacometti, and Kandinsky. The museum attracts a continuous stream of international visitors every day. Today, the Ohara Museum of Art continues to expand its collection of global treasures, and its folk art-focused comprehensive museum, which reflects the sensibilities of the Japanese people, enjoys global acclaim. On the occasion of its 70th anniversary in 2000, the water lilies from the "Monet Japanese Garden" in Giverny, France, were transported all the way to the pond next to the "Crafts Gallery" at the Ohara Museum of Art. In spring and summer, the blossoming lotuses add a delightful rural charm for visitors.
