Okayama City

Okayama City is a city located in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It serves as the prefectural capital of Okayama and is designated as a core city under Japan’s government ordinance. The city flourished as a “castle town” from the 16th to the 19th century and now stands as the central urban hub of the San’yō region, as well as a major transportation junction connecting the San’in and Shikoku regions.

Okayama City boasts Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s three most famous traditional gardens. There are also several art museums and science museums. Constructed in the 16th century, Okayama Castle is painted black on the outside, giving it a crow-like appearance and earning it the nickname “Ujo” (Crow Castle). Korakuen is Japan’s oldest lawn garden, built in the 17th century over a period of 14 years. Covering an area of approximately 133,000 square meters, the garden features a highly intricate design. The Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art houses numerous works by painters and artists hailing from Okayama Prefecture. Meanwhile, the Takehisa Yumeji Museum is also quite popular; Takehisa Yumeji was a representative poet and painter in early 20th-century Japan.

In addition, visitors can explore Ikeda Zoo, the Okayama City Handayama Botanical Garden, Kibitsu Shrine, Kibitsuhiko Shrine, Bitchū Takamatsu Castle, Tōgōen Garden, and Saihōji Temple’s Kannon Hall, among others.
