Takahashi City

Takahashi City is a city located in the western part of Okayama Prefecture, bordering Hiroshima Prefecture. Most of its area lies on the Chūgoku Plateau, and like the neighboring city of Sōja, it is entirely within the historical territory of Bitchū Province. Due to a continuously declining population in recent years, the city has become an aging society. However, with the presence of Kibi International University, there is a notably high population of people aged between 19 and 23, making it a student town.

Takahashi City has long been a strategic stronghold, historically at the heart of Bitchū Province. During the Edo period under the feudal domain system, it was centered around Matsuyama Domain. In modern times, it has developed as a hub for politics, economy, and education. The city’s most famous landmark is Matsuyama Castle, also known as Takahashi Castle, located at Uchiyama in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. It is a designated National Historic Site and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Castles. Other must-visit sites include Reikyu-ji Temple (a Japanese garden with a view of Mount Atago), Fresco (a preserved district of traditional buildings), Banjaku Valley, Banjaku Cave, and Tsurukashiro Castle.
