Sōja City

Sōja City is a city located in the central part of Okayama Prefecture. The western and northern parts of its jurisdiction lie on the Kibi Plateau, while the southern area features hilly terrain. The main urban area is situated in a basin surrounding the central Takahashi River. Due to its proximity to the Mitsubishi Motors Mizushima Plant, the city has numerous factories related to the automotive industry, which have become the primary sector of the local economy. This has also attracted many other industries to set up factories here, including Calpis, Yamazaki Baking, and Suzuki Motor Corporation.

It is believed to be the origin of the Momotarō legend, specifically the battle between Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto and the demon god — Ura. The ruins of Ura’s castle, known as “Kino Castle,” are said to be located here. Kino Castle is a kuruwa-style mountain fortress situated in Sōja City, Okayama Prefecture. Neither its builder nor the exact time of construction is known. It serves as the setting for both the Momotarō and Ura legends and has been designated as a National Historic Site. It is also one of Japan’s 100 Famous Castles. Bitchū Kokubun-ji is a Shingon Ritsu sect temple located in Sōja City, Okayama Prefecture. Its mountain name is “Taiyōzan,” and its principal image is the Medicine Buddha. It was founded by Emperor Shōmu. The five-story pagoda of the temple, nestled in pastoral scenery, is a symbol of the tourist destination of the Kibiji region. In addition, you shouldn’t miss Hōfuku-ji Temple, Sakazuka Ancient Tomb, Gōkei Valley, and the birthplace of Sesshū.
