Tongliang Ancient Banyan

Tongliang Ancient Banyan is located in front of Bao’an Temple in Tongliang Village on Baisha Island. With an age of over 300 years, it is regarded as a sacred tree by locals and is the only large banyan tree on Penghu Island. The tree has dozens of branches, lush and densely leafy, forming a natural canopy that provides shade over half an acre — a rare sight in the world. Given Penghu’s originally unsuitable geographical environment for plant growth, it is truly remarkable that this banyan tree thrives here with such exuberant foliage. To protect the branches, residents have enclosed each one with wooden boards, supported by frames and pillars to prop up the massive tree.
