What to do in Penghu this autumn? The inaugural Tourism Cup Table Tennis Tournament kicks off to reverse the tourism off-season

Every summer, Penghu attracts a large number of travelers for vacation. To continuously invigorate Penghu’s tourism during the autumn and winter off-season, the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration under the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has launched the “Penghu Autumn Craze Series” for the first time this year. The “First Tourism Cup Table Tennis Championship” kicked off on September 21 as the opening event, encouraging civil servants to use their National Travel Card for consumption in Penghu, aiming to establish a unique sports tourism model for the autumn season in Penghu.

The inaugural Tourism Cup Table Tennis Championship opened at 1:30 p.m. on the 21st at the Penghu County Gymnasium, with a total of 295 participants from 27 government agencies and organizations forming teams. In addition to various scenic area administrations under the Tourism Bureau and the Penghu County Tourism Office, as well as public market offices, it also attracted participants from the Taitung County Government Tourism and Travel Office, Yunlin County Government, Pingtung County Government Tourism and Communication Office, Yilan County Government, Nantou County Government Tourism Office, Chiayi City Government Transportation and Tourism Office, Miaoli County Government Culture and Tourism Bureau, and Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau.
Deputy Director of the Tourism Bureau, Chang Hsi-tsung, said that the Tourism Bureau is vigorously promoting the “Penghu Autumn Craze Series” to invigorate Penghu’s tourism during the off-season. It is hoped that through promotional events, civil servants will be encouraged to use their National Travel Cards for travel in Penghu. The main invitees are national scenic area administrations under the Tourism Bureau and tourism groups from various county and city governments. Aside from fostering friendships through the sport and enhancing the culture of sports and leisure, it also provides an opportunity for tourism-related agencies and groups to interact with one another.

The Tourism Bureau hopes to integrate sports, gourmet food, and experiential tourism itineraries. By participating in and spectating sports events, it aims to increase the visibility of localized community-based tourism operations, establish a unique sports tourism industry model for Penghu in autumn, and reshape the impression of Penghu’s autumn and winter to promote tourism during these seasons.
Former Deputy Director of the Tourism Bureau, Liu Xilin, who has now taken up the position of Vice President at National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, also specifically served as the team leader for the Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau and personally participated in the event. He said that among Taiwan’s outlying islands, only Penghu uses marine activities as a highlight to attract tourists, so seasonal factors can affect the number of visitors. However, sports are not seasonal, and through promotional events to attract visitors, it can also bring some tourism value to Penghu during the off-season.
The Penghu Administration also took advantage of breaks in the competition schedule to arrange for participating athletes to explore the Mago Cultural City and Magong Commercial District, as well as a one-day tour itinerary, combined with community experience programs, allowing the athletes to experience the beauty and local culture of Penghu. On the evening of the 22nd, the closing ceremony and award presentation will be held during the “Ocean Food Festival in Penghu,” along with a flag handover ceremony where the Penghu Administration will pass on the hosting rights of the next Tourism Cup Table Tennis Tournament to the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration.
