Penghu Archipelago

The Penghu Archipelago is Taiwan’s largest group of offshore islands and the earliest developed area in the province. Located in the Taiwan Strait, it boasts numerous fishing harbors where thousands of fishing lights flicker on and off at night, reflecting off the water and blending with the starlight to create the renowned “Penghu Fishing Fires,” once selected by the Taiwan Provincial Government as one of Taiwan’s Eight Scenic Spots.

The Penghu Archipelago is made up of 64 islands of various sizes, featuring exceptionally beautiful natural landscapes. Famous sights include the “Wind-Box Tidal Roar,” “Whale Cave,” “Wangan Basalt Cliffs,” “Hujing Sunken City,” “Admiral Islet Sail Rock,” “Huayu Isle Immortal’s Footprint,” and “Tongpan Isle Stone Pillars.” Of course, tourism resources extend far beyond beaches and land—there are also shallow-water, underwater, and sea-surface attractions all awaiting further development. The archipelago is renowned for its abundant catches of pomfret and skipjack tuna, along with mackerel, sharks, squid, and lobsters. Early autumn is the best time of year to visit Penghu for fresh seafood.

The Penghu Archipelago is home to traditional settlements of early immigrants, showcasing uniquely adapted spatial landscapes, as well as spaces reflecting colonial and military defense influences from periods of foreign rule. These diverse spatial features reflect Penghu’s long history and rich cultural character. The region’s Tianhou Temple is Taiwan’s oldest Mazu temple, and other historic sites include the Wenshi Academy, Guanyin Pavilion, Tomb of the Seven Beauties, and Xitai Fortress. Notable attractions such as the famous Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge, Tongpan Isle, and Tongliang Banyan Tree also offer their own distinctive charm.
