New Campus of Southwest Jiaotong University

Southwest Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is among the first group of universities included in China’s “211 Project,” “985 Project with Distinctive Features,” and “2011 Plan,” and is a research-oriented university with a graduate school. The university is located in Chengdu, a renowned historical and cultural city and a national central city in China.

The university was founded in 1896 as the Imperial Chinese Railway College in Shanhaiguan, making it China’s first higher institution of engineering education. It is the birthplace of higher education in civil engineering, transportation engineering, and mining and metallurgical engineering in China, and one of the two original sources of what later became known as “Jiaotong University.” It gained international renown under the names “Tangshan Jiaotong University” and “Tangshan College,” and was often referred to as the “Oriental Cornell.” Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the university’s name. Since its establishment, the university has undergone several name changes, including Jiaotong University Tangshan Engineering College, National Jiaotong University Guizhou Branch, China Jiaotong University, and Tangshan Railway Institute. Following the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions in 1952, some departments were transferred to peer institutions such as Tsinghua University and Tianjin University. In 1964, in line with the central government’s strategy to develop the “Third Front,” the university relocated to Sichuan. It was renamed Southwest Jiaotong University in 1972 and moved to Chengdu in 1989. The university now has three campuses—Jiuli, Xipu, and Emei—covering a total area of over 5,000 acres, with the Xipu Campus serving as the main campus.
