Shidi Ancient Town

Shidi Ancient Town is located in the northeastern part of Xiushan County, about 47 kilometers from the county seat. It was formed by the alluvial action of the Meijiang River and the You River, rising abruptly from the surrounding landscape. Built along the mountain contours, the town is staggered and picturesque. From the highest point in Shidi Ancient Town, visitors can overlook the confluence of the two rivers, evoking a sense of “the You River flowing eastward, and Shidi setting sail afar.” At sunset, the scene by the ancient wharf—Tujia girls washing clothes, moored black-canopied boats, and cormorants with their heads tucked in—forms a perfect depiction of an idyllic “fishing boats returning at dusk.” Additionally, the Tang Dynasty cliff tombs on the opposite bank of the ancient wharf, the stone carving reading “Turning Danger into Safety,” the ancient streets of Shidi, the rolled-arch gateways, and the local Shidi tofu fish dish all combine to leave every visitor amazed by this “mini mountain city” and “mini Chaotianmen” of eastern Chongqing—its refinement, elegance, and laid-back charm.
