Qingxi Miao King Tomb
The Qingxi Miao King Tomb is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongqing Municipality.
The Qingxi Miao King Tomb is located in Banghao Village, Qingxichang Town, Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
Situated in Banghao Village, Qingxichang Town, about 12 kilometers west of Xiushan County, it was historically known as Dafenbao. This tomb is not recorded in the county annals. According to legend, during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, the local Miao leader Wu Lao K led a resistance against the brutal suppression by the Tusi (local hereditary chieftains)—an event referred to as the “campaign to drive out the Miao and seize their land.” He led the Miao people in fierce battles against the Tusi. During one such battle, Wu Lao K was tragically killed. To honor this national hero, local Miao villagers each brought a handful of soil to bury him. Over the years, these contributions accumulated into a large earthen mound, hence the name.
The tomb is a circular earthen burial mound. Originally, it stood 10 meters high, with a top diameter of 9.7 meters and a base circumference of 76 meters. There was no original epitaph. In 1986, the county government erected a stone stele inscribed with “Miao King Tomb” in front of the mound. The stele is 0.7 meters wide and 1.3 meters tall. In 1984, it was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit. This tomb is the only relatively well-preserved ancient Miao tomb remaining in Xiushan, holding significant value for the study of the history of the Miao people in the region.
In 2000, the Qingxi Miao King Tomb was listed by the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government as one of the first batch of municipal cultural relics protection units in Chongqing.
