Former Residence of Yuan Guoping

The former residence of Yuan Guoping is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The former residence of Yuan Guoping, Director of the Political Department of the New Fourth Army, is located in Yuanta, Meiren Village, Fanjiashan Town, Shaodong County, Hunan Province. The old Yuan family courtyard is about 20 meters from the road.

It is approximately 300 meters from the local mother river—the Shaoshui River.

It lies about 17 kilometers from both Shaodong County and downtown Shaoyang City.

Yuan Guoping’s Former Residence—Yuanta (Meiren Village, Fanjiashan, Shaodong). Situated to the north of the old courtyard, it was first built in the 11th year of the Jiaqing reign during the Qing Dynasty (1806). The residence includes three main rooms and four wing rooms, covering an area of about 300 square meters. Yuan Guoping (1906–1941), an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, once served as Director of the Political Department of the New Fourth Army. On January 15, 1941, Comrade Yuan Guoping heroically sacrificed his life during the breakout battle in the Southern Anhui Incident.

Yuan Guoping (1906–1941), courtesy name Yu, also known as Zuihan, was a native of Fanjiashan in the eastern part of Shaoyang County (now Shaodong County). He was born in May of the 32nd year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1906). His father was a farmer who also earned a living by ginning cotton. Yuan began studying at a private school at the age of six. Gifted and studious, he passed the entrance exam for Baoqing Xuncheng School at ten years old, where he excelled academically and had a talent for poetry. Once, while composing verse atop Shihu Mountain with his teacher, he expressed his sentiments: “Amidst a tangled sea of peaks, where can one climb to gaze afar? I envy the lone summit standing proud, unmoved even as evening clouds descend.” Reflecting on the times, he harbored extraordinary aspirations. Fanjiashan Town: Fanjiashan Town has been administratively merged with Niumasi Town to form the new Niumasi Town.

A town under the jurisdiction of Shaodong County. Established in 1952, it became a commune in 1957 and was reinstated as a town in 1984. Located in the western part of the county, it is 19 kilometers from the county seat, covers an area of 32.7 square kilometers, and has a population of 25,000. The town government is headquartered in Fanjiashan. National Highway 320 and the Loudi-Shaoyang Railway run through the town.
