Xie Song was a "fierce general" in the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. Also known as Xie Xiaoyun, he was born in 1903 in Shangcheqiao, Shangche Bridge (now Shangqiao Village, Fanjiashan Town, Shaodong County, Hunan Province). He worked as an apprentice and a dyer. In 1924, he joined the Hunan Army as a soldier. In July 1928, he participated in the Pingjiang Uprising and joined the Communist Party of China in the autumn of the same year.

Starting in 1930, he successively served as the commander of the Special Task Battalion of the 5th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, the commander of the 55th Regiment of the 19th Division of the 7th Red Army, the commander of the Model Regiment of Ganxian County in the Jiangxi Military District, and the commander of the 12th Regiment of the 4th Division of the 3rd Red Army Corps. He took part in all the anti-encirclement campaigns in the Central Soviet Area. During the Dayangzhang Battle in the Fifth Anti-Encirclement Campaign, he personally led his troops at the front line, commanding them to fight to the death against an enemy ten times their size. He repeatedly repelled enemy attacks and captured a large amount of weaponry and military supplies. After the battle, the Political Department of the 3rd Red Army Corps awarded the 5th Company of the 12th Regiment the pennant of "Model Red Fifth Company: Victory Against Greater Numbers and Resolute Defense." Xie Song fought bravely, commanded with agility and determination, and always led from the front. He was wounded five times in battle. On August 1, 1934, the Central Revolutionary Military Commission awarded him the Third-Class Red Star Medal.

In October of the same year, the Central Red Army began the Long March. To divert enemy forces and reduce the resistance faced by the Central Red Army’s northward advance, Xie Song was ordered to lead the 12th Regiment toward Guangdong. After the main force had safely transferred and the goal of luring the enemy was achieved, he skillfully shook off the enemy and swiftly caught up with the main force. During the Long March, he led his troops in several key offensive operations, crossing the Chishui River and capturing the Lou Shan Pass, achieving numerous military successes. After arriving in northern Shaanxi, he served as Chief of Staff of the Military Department of the Shaan-Gan Provincial Government, participating in the establishment of the 29th Red Army. He subsequently served as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, Acting Commander, and Commander of the 29th Red Army. He led his troops in persisting with military struggles in the northern Shaanxi region, supporting campaigns such as the Eastern and Western Expeditions, successfully completing missions, and earning high praise from Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. In January 1937, he entered the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University for study.

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he was sent to Shanxi, where he served as Head of the Operations Section of the Armed Forces Department under the General Mobilization Committee of the War Zone, and as Commander of the 1st Guerrilla Column. At the end of 1937, he was seriously injured in a car accident while on his way to Yan’an to report on work. He died in Suide, Shaanxi in early 1938 at the age of 35.
