New Fourth Army Jiukouyan Memorial Hall

The New Fourth Army Jiukouyan Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

Jiukouyan is situated in the middle section of the Baimiao Mountain Range. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, it functioned as the command hub of our Party in the Eyu Border Region and played an important role in the history of the New Fourth Army's 5th Division.

On December 18, 1939, — led the Eyu Advance Column into the Jiukouyan area of Luoyang to establish the Baimiao Mountain Base. On April 5, 1941, the Eyu Advance Column was reorganized into the New Fourth Army’s 5th Division, and — assumed office via telegram from Jiukouyan. In the summer of 1942, the New 5th Division crushed the third “mopping-up” campaign launched by — here, annihilating an entire regiment of enemy troops in the Battle of Shengchang and achieving a major victory against the “encirclement and suppression.” Soon after, the main force of the New 5th Division was temporarily ordered to withdraw from Jiukouyan and move eastward to E’dong. In April 1945, — directed troops to eliminate an enemy special operations detachment in Luoyang Store, reclaiming the Baimiao Mountain Base, and the New 5th Division reoccupied Jiukouyan. From December 1939 to June 1942 and again from April to September 1945, officers and soldiers of the New 5th Division lived and fought at Jiukouyan for a total of three years. This period marked a crucial phase in the division’s establishment, formation, development, and growth.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan, the former site of the New Fourth Army’s 5th Division—Jiukouyan Memorial Hall in Luoyang Town, Suizhou’s Zengdu District—has been fully renovated. On July 28, reporters on-site observed that a bronze statue of — had been erected in front of the square, a 12-meter-high Revolutionary Martyrs Monument was standing beside the tomb of martyr Huang Chunting, and ancient residential buildings in Sunjiawan, which date back over 270 years, have all been restored. Historical relics inside the museum have also been rearranged for display. The New 5th Division Memorial Hall consists of 56 rooms, built with earth and timber in a three-courtyard, two-hall, symmetrical layout. Originally constructed in the 11th year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1733), it is a relatively intact ancient residence rich in cultural heritage. However, after more than 270 years of weathering, the memorial hall had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of collapse. To preserve this patriotic education site, the City Old Revolutionary Base Areas Development Promotion Association raised funds from all sectors of society, collecting over 800,000 yuan in donations. The buildings were comprehensively refurbished, precious historical photos and artifacts were collected, and interior exhibits were redesigned. Artists from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts were also invited to paint a circular mural accompanied by sound effects, recreating the heroic battle scenes of the New 5th Division troops and providing visitors with an immersive experience.
